today, i'm homeward bound. i got word from my dad this afternoon that a storm's a-brewin'. so alas, i threw my stuff in the car and hit to road. since the drive is just shy of six hours i will likely be unable make a real post today. so i stopped real quick to show the blog a little bit of love from my iPhone. please forgive me and i will be sure to redeem myself tomorrow...

new thanksgiving challenge.

syllipsi, the disposable cameras have yet to arrive so we are going to postpone that challenge until after thanksgiving. but we have come up with a new challenge for the week: GIVE THANKS!

a few questions to get your creative juices flowing: what does thanksgiving mean to you? what sort of things or people or moments come to mind? what are you thankful for? what does it mean to be grateful?

the thanksgiving photo challenge.

so the thanksgiving photo challenge is...to shoot a roll of film with a B&W DISPOSABLE CAMERA. that's right...see what you can do with no ability to focus, set apertures and shutter speeds, see a preview of your photo or edit them in photoshop. you got 27 exposures and a flash....ready go.

SO, here's the thing the first 20 people to e-mail me (jshipley@westmont.edu) get one FREE!!!! hurry up and send me your MS# and we will slip one in your mailbox.

so, everyone is responsible for developing his or her film and submitting a photo cd to us (you can ask the lab to do this for you). you have till the week after Thanksgiving to get the disc to us. more details to come on that process once we get back. go it? aiight ya'll, see you around!

this week's syllipsi event is going to be schweet. it's theme is: VINTAGE.

[Wednesday, November 14th. 7:30 pm. Art Center Lower Classroom.]

first on the agenda: a history of photography. we have invited Westmont's own Art History professor, Dr. Lisa DeBoer, to come give a short history of photography. This should be a real treat and will inform us about the past of our art form and some of the complexities surrounding its development and progression. This talk should also invite some interesting discussion afterwards. Please join us! Don't miss it.

second: we will look at submissions from this week's mini-photo friday. since it short notice: we are going to a "syllipsi portfolio submission". so file through your photos and submit three favorite VINTAGE photographs. that could mean many things: something that is actually vintage, a black and white photo, perhaps a vintage someone for that matter. go it?

third: the big reveal of the thanksgiving photo challenge. the first 40 people to arrive will get a free...vintage something.
(you will have to come to find out. haha. and you will not be disappointed.)

fourth: we will eat something um, vintage. not sure that that will look like yet, but we will see what we can come up with. aiight?

This Thursday, November 1st at 5:00 pm we will gather in the vk parking lot and head out together for a night on the town. get dressed up and come to the Art Walk in Downtown Santa Barbara. we will cruise through the art galleries and make a special stop at the Brook's photography gallery on Cota. this is a chance to expose ourselves to the local art and photography scene and should be tons of fun. we hope you all can come. for more information check out the First Thursdays Art Walk website here

Brooks Institute will host Santa Barbara’s first Heart Gallery event. This exhibition aims to raise awareness for childhood adoption and is among 40 galleries nationwide that have already helped to place hundreds of children. These inspirational images, shot and donated by Brooks faculty and Alumni photographers, portray local area children in need of adoptive families. Founded by the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD), Heart Gallery exhibits serve as an innovative program to recruit adoptive families and raise public awareness.

photo fridays, eh? what does that mean? well, let me tell you. this is our weekly photo challenge. we will come up with a theme for the week, and you will go out and take photos with that theme in mind. then you will submit your photos every wednesday and we will get together thursdays at 9pm to show and critique each others' work. we will pick our favorites and, on friday, we will post the week's favorite three images on the blog for a little shout out and some internet love. we will also then announce the next week's theme. got it? so fun, i know. i can't wait to see started. get pumped!

Eli Reed is a 20-year member of Magnum Photos, one of the world’s leading photography cooperatives founded 60 years ago. Especially known for his work in El Salvador, Guatemala and Beirut, Reed has been recognized with many awards including the W. Eugene Smith Grant in Documentary Photography. He directed the video documentary “Getting Out” about gangs in Detroit.

Anne Day is a freelance photographer and writer based in New York and Connecticut. Editorial clients include TIME, Newsweek, the New York Times and the Washington Post. She has worked on seven Day in the Life books as an assignment editor and photographer. Her overseas work includes photographs
made in Haiti, Cuba and South Africa. She has been the principal photographer on several books about the architecture of the Library of Congress, the New York Public Library and the U.S. Capitol.

Yes, that is right! we want to see those b-e-a-u-tiful FLOWERshots of yours! And seeing that it is a busy week we will accept both recent shots and shots within the last year! Of course, we would love to challange you to be intentional about your shots and to get out there and capture each week's theme, but understand that sometimes you may be so busy that you haven't gotten the chace to get your camera out (which is a tradegy to be sure) or have some ahh-mazing, related shot that you are just dying to share...so share it, aiight? (p.s. please give us your feedback on what you like and don't like about Photo Fridays...as you can see we are still trying to figure out the best way to operate 'em and would love you help and input! Hey everyone! Well, we apologize for seemingly dissappearing from our photo existence, but we assure you that Syllipsi is still alive and well. We know that you all have been quite busy with the craziness that is the Spring Semester but would still love to encourage you to keep shooting and submitting your stuff! Hey everyone! Wow, we can't believe the interest you all have shown in the first week, and we are so excited to get started! So without further ado, we present to you the first Photo Friday! What better way to start off Syllipsi's weekly competition, than to remember the year that was: 2005. That's right people, we want your Schweetest Shots of 2005! So here's what you got to do...browse through your favorite shots, pick you top three, e-mail them to syllipsi@gmail.com or give a CD to either Chris or me (Jeff) and, then we will pick the winning image and perhaps some honorable mentions. Introducing Syllipsi

Well, afer much thought, planning and anticipation, we are excited to announce to you the start of the first photography club Westmont has ever seen: SYLLIPSI. The purpose of this cool new entity is to create a venue for Westmont photographers that enables them to showcase their work, learn from their peers, and ultimately become better photographers. We hope to unite the Westmont community through the artistic medium of photography and learn how to freeze moments in time, capture the expression of emotion and appreciate the beauty in God’s creation.

You may be askin' "of what do you speak when you say Syllipsi?" Well, syllipsi is the Greek word for capture. And we photographers capture images, eh? see the connection? I know, I know we are just that cool...
